Do you really need nutritional supplements?
The quality and nutritional value of the foods that we eat has been significantly compromised by many different factors. For example, crops are typically grown in nutritionally depleted soil, fruits and vegetables are frequently picked too early and then shipped long distances and toxic sprays and chemicals are sprayed on crops to prevent insect damage. All of these realities have a negative impact upon the nutritional content that we get from food alone. Another sad state of affairs is that most of us have become so busy with life that many times a home cooked meal rarely occurs in many households in the United States. Americans have resorted to consuming fast foods and highly processed foods in the way of boxed dinners, thus not eating foods with high nutritional quality.
The bottom line is that we need nutritional supplementation. Further, we must become educated about what we can do to implement healthy lifestyles into our daily regimens, and it is obvious that it is nearly impossible to meet our nutritional requirements by diet alone. Recent documentation published by The Health Awareness Foundation stated that in a large 26,000 person study it was concluded that "not one person received the nutritional requirements set forth by the RDA" (Recommended Daily Allowance). The publication goes on to establish that 96% of the US population dies of a disease, and that we are NOT getting proper nutrition.
The medical community has been somewhat divided in the past on this issue, but recently the American Medical Association (a very conservative organization), released a very strong statement that says, "Insufficient vitamin intake is apparently a cause of chronic diseases… Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. Pending strong evidence of effectiveness from randomized trials, it appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements."
It is important to note that quality counts tremendously, and all nutritional supplements are not the same. Some, actually a few, are manufactured to high stands of quality and follow pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing standards, while others follow the minimum standards prescribed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). These standards are geared towards food products and don't set the bar very high for nutritional supplements. The reality is that it is extremely important to take good quality supplements because cheap nutritional supplements will not get the job done in most cases.
Dr.Lawson has done extensive research on how a nutritional company should be evaluated, and currently we are recommending products manufactured by ProThera and CustomVite.
CustomVite - Customized nutritional supplements
Do you get confused and end up guessing which supplements are right for you? When it comes to nutritional supplementation, "one size" does not "fit all." We all have different bodies, different diets, different health conditions and different medications. A unique process occurs between the tissues and nutrients in our bodies that results in an individual's unique biochemical needs. Each person's nutritional needs are unique and these needs are subject to change. Perhaps a new health condition has developed, a dietary change occurred, a new or different prescription medication may have been prescribed or perhaps it is merely that the aging process has brought about changes. For this reason it is also important to retest each individual's needs on a regular (usually annual) basis.
Prescription medications can change supplement requirements. In some cases, prescription medications will cause one to require more of certain nutrients. Medications can actually deplete the body of some important nutrients. For example, estrogen replacement therapy can cause depletions of vitamin C, zinc, some of the B vitamins, magnesium and calcium. Also, the use of statin drugs (cholesterol lowering) severely depletes CoQ10.
Scientific knowledge is always evolving, leading us to view certain supplements differently. For example, synthetic beta-carotene was long considered perfectly safe; however, research revealed that it was carcinogenic for smokers. CoQ10 has become much more widely used because of its cardiovascular benefits. It is necessary to constantly investigate scientific literature and change supplement protocols to keep up to date. A customized supplement program is the best way to ensure that one's unique supplementation needs are being met.
We offer a customized supplementation program, CustomVite®, that is manufactured by NutriLab, LLC. Each person's health is compromised in a different way, and our customized supplementation protocol is based upon the patient's medical history, current eating habits and activity patterns. For even greater precision, hair and/or blood tests, urine, saliva and stool tests may also be collected. The more information and data that is available provides greater accuracy for a custom formula that has the right ingredients in the right dosages specifically for the individual. Once all of the results have been interpreted, CustomVite® will develop a unique personal NutriScript.
